Canyoning - Canyoneering, Kloofing, River Tracing, whatever you
call it, is the action of exploring a canyon, an adventure sport
activity traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques that
may include walking, scrambling, climbing, sliding, jumping,
abseiling and swimming. In essence, it is technical descent that
requires rappels (abseils) and rope work, technical climbing or
down-climbing, technical jumps, and technical swims. It is a
great adventure sport full of fun and thrill playing with rock
and water and in the most inaccessible nooks of nature in serene
environment. Hardware involves tools and equipments like; rope,
harness, prusiks, carabineer, figure 8, safety tether, helmet,
wetsuit etc.
Canyoning in Nepal
Canyoning in Nepal is recently introduced as a new activity by a
few trained canyoneers and adventure tour operators. Our company
- Himaland is one of the pioneers. Canyoning/ canyoneering is a
popular adventure sport in Europe since 1980s and in America
since 1990s. Guided canyon trips are already a professional
sport in many countries like; France, Spain, Italy, Switzerland,
Austria, Germany, New Zealand, USA and many more in the west.
Considering the sheer size of the Himalayas and big mountains
stretching from the East to the West, Nepal is a ground of
exception as regards to the morphology and the aesthetic of
canyons and the main characteristic to the entirety of canyons:
depth and verticality. Hence, CANYONING holds a tremendous
potential as a new and adventure tourism product in Nepal. There
are numerous canyons of different grades in the mid mountain
range and some of them are higher up in the foothills of the
Himalayan range. They are of world class and both fascinating
and challenging.
